Gambling Addiction – How to Recognize the Symptoms

Gambling is basically the wagering on something of equal value with an uncertainty as to the outcome with the intention of winning something in return. In other words, gambling can be described as a game of chance where something unpredictable occurs. Gambling therefore requires three ingredients to exist: risk, consideration, and a reward. This may sound simple, but there are actually many different types of gambling and they all have very different ways of rewarding people with winnings. However, the commonality amongst them all is that you play a game in hopes to win and in return, you are rewarded.

The first type of gambling addiction is called the higher risk type where you are rewarded if you win. There are many different forms of gambling including bridge, craps, baccarat, high rollers, slot machines, video poker machines, etc. With each type of these games, the rewards can be in the form of cash, gifts, prizes, free drinks, airline tickets, hotel rooms, tickets to concerts and shows, etc. Sometimes the gifts may not be actual goods but things like clothes, food coupons, tickets to events and shows, etc. Most casinos place limits on the maximum amount of free gifts that can be given away, so the player is always on the lookout for more gifts to win. However, when all else fails and the player is at the losing end, he has no choice but to keep playing and hopefully win some more money.

The second type of gambling is called the non-gambling type and is where you do not bet on anything that is involved with gambling. This can include lotteries, card games and sports bet. One major advantage of lotteries is that it allows you to test your skill at gambling without putting yourself at risk. Most people who have been addicted to betting on games of chance for a while to find it very difficult to get back to the path of normal living and most of them have found it very difficult to leave behind their addiction to betting. This is another reason why lotteries are very popular among gambling addicts.

A lot of research has been conducted in the field of gambling addiction and lots of treatment options have been developed. The first step in any treatment program is the evaluation of the condition and if it is determined that a person is suffering from gambling addiction, then individual help will have to be sought. There are various treatment centers, which offer complete rehabilitation programs for gambling addicts. However, most of these centers take time to completely cure the problem and most of the addicts find it very difficult to resume normal life styles.

Professional help is also available for those who are serious about treating their addictions. Some of the problems associated with gambling behavior include social withdrawal, feeling of guilt, depression, anxiety and stress. People suffering from these problems can be treated with medications, counseling and therapy. If the addiction is serious, then the person can be given medication that can either control the urge to gamble or reduce the intensity of the effect of such an urge.

Hypnotherapy is another method of treating compulsive problem gambling. This method helps people develop the ability to face their fears and to overcome the impulse to gamble. It teaches the person to become confident and to view his/her gambling as just a part of everyday life. In time, they can overcome their addictions and lead normal lives.
